New Mexico Watercolor Society Workshop:

Primarily self-taught, Carol has distinguished herself as one of the prime movers in contemporary realistic watercolor painting. Whether large or small, her paintings resonate with a strong sense of place. “I want to portray what I see and also what I feel even when it means adding or subtracting elements to make a more compelling impression of being there,” she observes, surrounded by the brushes, pans, tubes and rag papers that fill her studio. Her New Mexico depictions of hollyhocks are faithful and alive, and like all her work, give the viewer the full visual and emotional experience of a subject’s innate meaning and essence. She is mostly known for her portrayal of adobe structures, textures and hollyhocks
Carol’s initial interest in art was sparked by her artistic mother, who took her to art classes. Her family lived in the artistic communities of Carmel and La Jolla, CA. On her way to school, she passed artists painting beautiful landscapes. She attended Foothill College, CA and graduated from UNM with a background in Art History and Drawing. She found watercolors are special to her. She began by reading and studying different techniques, and soon learned that practice is key. “Now when I teach, I try to communicate what I have learned and help each student develop their own style. I teach through demonstrations, examples and practice.
Carol has judged many art shows, including the Miniatures Division of the Masterworks Art Show, having previously won “Best of Show” in the Miniatures Division and “First Place” in the Standard Division. She was named a “Local Treasure” during the ABQ Art Showcase. She has also participated for several years in the NM Fine Arts Museum’s ArtsThrive. Carol is represented by Weems Gallery, Albuquerque. She lives and paints in Albuquerque.
Workshop
I will provide a packet of information I have assembled over time for my students. In this workshop I will cover composition, use of colors, definitions, examples and “Carol’s Hints.”
Everyone who signs up for the workshop will receive a sketchbook for notes and notans (black and white drawings). I use these notebooks to plan paintings and keep track of ideas I have accumulated over time. I will have examples of my notebooks for students to see how I use them.
We will use photos to inspire ideas to paint. I will bring photos of landscapes, flowers, or other structures (some with combinations of subjects). Students may use my photos if they prefer. For some reason I like to paint alleys and narrow streets. You may bring your own photos, however, mine will be examples of what we are discussing.
Come prepared to paint the first morning. I like to get started!

Drawing is a skill that can take years to master. Drawing is a foundational skill in good painting. Truly great drawing, beautiful in and of itself, uses refined and sensitive line and stands exquisitely on its own merits. Drawing for painting has a different purpose. Proportion, perspective, massing, and value shapes all take precedence over beautiful line quality. The brush, loaded with paint, will obscure the drawing underneath. The drawing needs to be good, and accurate, before laying in the paint, however. The purpose of this three-day workshop is to give you tools, strategies, and drawing fundamentals, to improve your drawing skills and to better design your paintings.
Supply list and syllabus will be available and emailed to registrants several weeks before the workshop begins in April 2025.
Workshop Fees: $275 for RGAA members and $325 non-members, 1/2 down deposit, balance due 1 week prior. Members: Log on before registering to receive the member workshop fee of $275. Non-members: consider joining RGAA for $35 per year and save $15. Pastel Society and Water Color Society Members join us for $275.

“Understanding and Expressing Natural Light and Color”
We are very honored to have Landscape artist Bill Cone leading our 2025 Masterworks Workshop. Bill’s workshop is based on teaching people how to see, to observe and understand atmospheric light, color temperature, the behavior of water and composition, independent of the mediums used to make a picture. Please note the 3rd day of this exciting workshop will be held outdoors working plein air near the Rio Grande River.
Born and raised in California, Bill Cone has been painting landscapes for the past 23 years, often in the Bay Area and with yearly trips into the Sierra. He has also worked as a film designer for Pixar Animation Studios. His landscapes have been exhibited in various galleries and venues in California and also available at the Total Arts Gallery in Taos, NM.
