Modernizing Landscapes for Miniatures –
Rémy Rotenier
Monday, March 30

The class will be given images of landscapes. We will work on creating a miniature by rendering what we see in a more abstract way. Composition will be important, the use of color, and a general “look” that we will discuss individually! Basically, recreating what we see in simple forms:  having textures, value and depth in mind. With tracing paper, we will understand what forms we are looking at. The student will then make decisions, scale it down and paint it as a 6” x 4” painting on French grey paper.

Rémy Rotenier is a Paris born jewelry designer, gemologist and award-winning painter. He studied art and prepared for the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and received a bachelor’s degree in jewelry design from l’école du Louvre.

From the precision of his traditional European jewelry painting techniques, he started painting miniatures several years ago and has received 8 awards from Masterworks New Mexico and one international award. His astoundingly detailed miniatures are rooted in imaginative interpretations of historic works of art, sometimes celebrating iconic artists or based on social commentary.
